The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. by Chair Patricia Koski
- Minutes for the June 19, 2008, Graduate Council meeting stand approved, as no changes were suggested. (The minutes of the Graduate Council may be found at http://www.uark.edu/depts/gradinfo/dean/gradcouncil/minutes/index.html.)
- Professor Koski welcomed the new members of the Council: Professor Brinck Kerr, representing the interdisciplinary programs (a new seat on the Council); Professor Betsy Orr, representing the College of Education and Health Professions; Professor Lynne Webb, representing the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences; Ms. Sue Theiss, representing the Division of Student Affairs.
- Professor Koski distributed lists of the Council members and the 2008-09 meeting dates (Attachment A and Attachment B). She also pointed out that the October meeting will be on an unusual date and location.
- Professor Koski thanked the members of the Council who assisted with the New Graduate Student Orientation, held the day before the Council meeting.
- The Council elected the following representatives to University Committees: Lynne Webb, Calendar Committee; Terry Martin, University Course and Programs Committee; Frank Scheide, Library Committee; Claretha Banks, University Program Review Committee.
- There was no Old Business.
- New Business: The Council approved the changes contained in Attachment C and Attachment D to these two policies: The Academic Grievance Procedures for Graduate Students and the Grievance Policy and Procedures for Graduate Assistants. An editorial update is also included in Attachment C to change the name of the Office of Student Mediation and Conflict Resolution to the University Ombuds Office. The policy changes must be approved by the Faculty Senate.
- As part of the discussion of item #7, the Council finalized the membership of the Academic Appeals Subcommittee of the Graduate Council as stated here: The Academic Appeals subcommittee of the Graduate Council shall consist of the senior member of the Council from each college/interdisciplinary programs and the two representatives from the Graduate Dean’s Student Advisory Board who serve on the Council.
- The Council ruled that the update review of the graduate faculty status of temporary teaching faculty should be done every three years rather than every year. This decision needs no further review and will be implemented immediately.
- The Council approved, with one abstention, the graduate faculty recommendations listed in Attachment E.
There being no other business, the Council adjourned at 2:45 p.m.
