The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. by Chair Patricia Koski

  1. Minutes for the August 20, 2009, Graduate Council meeting stand approved, as no changes were suggested. (The minutes of the Graduate Council may be found at http://www.uark.edu/depts/gradinfo/dean/gradcouncil/minutes/index.html.)
  2. Professor Koski handed out the Graduate Council membership list (Attachment A), the Graduate Council committee assignment list (Attachment B), and the Graduate Council meeting dates (Attachment C).
  3. Professor Koski reported that the Teaching Assistant Effectiveness Advisory Committee hosted a workshop last week for Teaching Assistants.There were presentations by the Offices of Affirmative Action and Community Standards and Student Ethics, followed by a dinner at which faculty members led table-top discussions.
  4. Professor Koski reported that the Academic Appeals Committee heard two appeals this month – one for retroactive graduate credit for courses taken in the penultimate semester prior to graduation and one requesting the use of out-of-date course work.The Committee approved both appeals.
  5. There was no Old Business.
  6. There was no New Business.
  7. The Council continued the discussion about changes to the reporting requirement for the Annual Graduate Student Academic Review begun last month.Professor Martin recommended that the Council review all of the Annual Graduate Student Academic Review policies and procedures, rather than just the reporting requirement to the Graduate School, and the Council agreed.It was also suggested that the Council form a subcommittee to review these policies/procedures and bring recommendations to the Council.Each constituency was asked to submit the name of a representative for that subcommittee.Professor Koski will serve as chair.
  8. The Council discussed the recently-released AAUP recommendations on policies pertaining to graduate assistants.Following discussion, several members of the Council were asked to submit in writing specific suggestions for changes in current policy, for the Council to consider at a future meeting.
  9. The Council approved unanimously the course change report contained in Attachment D.
  10. The Council approved the graduate faculty recommendations listed in Attachment E.

There being no other business, the Council adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
