Whether you’re celebrating submitting your dissertation, need a quick mental break before finals, or enjoying a night off, playing games and coloring are similar to meditation in allowing us to switch off our brains from other thoughts and focus only on the moment, helping to alleviate free-floating anxiety. Dog Therapy with the K-9 officers from the University of Arkansas Police Department

9 a.m.-11 a.m. in the Graduate Student Lounge (Gearhart Hall 206)

Students and staff are welcome to visit with the UAPD dogs. Petting a canine companion can help lower blood pressure and help ease depression. People with heart disease who own dogs tend to live longer than those with the same ailments who don’t own a dog. And pets help decrease stress by lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and increasing levels of the neurochemical oxytocin, the love hormone.

Let’s Talk with CAPS

2 p.m.-4 p.m. in the Graduate Student Lounge (Gearhart Hall 206)

This great program, offered by CAPS, offers brief, informal consultations with a licensed mental health clinician. Consultations are free, no appointment is necessary, and students are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. At the U of A, the most common reasons students seek CAPS services are for anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues and family issues. It turns out that there's some truth to that "cops love donuts" stereotype. Back in the 1950s, police officers on the graveyard shift would stop by doughnut shops—which were among the few establishments open late—to do paperwork and have a snack. Eventually a reciprocal relationship developed: Doughnut shop owners welcomed the protection of police officers, and police officers liked having a place to chow down late at night, so the association stuck around.

What's better than coffee and donuts to perk up a mid-week slump? Coffee, donuts and FREE PIZZA of course! Come to the graduate student lounge at 11am to grab a slice or two while it lasts. And, if you're in the mood for some more fun facts, check out this article from Yahoo about 10 Different Ways We Eat Pizza (and What They Say About You).

Did you know? Coffee is actually a fruit. Coffee beans as we know them are actually the pits of a cherry-like berry that are grown on bushes. Even though coffee is actually a seed, it’s called a bean because of its resemblance to actual beans. See more from Good Housekeeping Article on History of Coffee.
